A Raisin in the Sun

The story is about a family that is expecting a check from the mail. A woman that have two kids that needs the money. The son wants the money to invest on a business and a daughter that needs the money for school. There’s a lot of selfishness, frustrations, and changes in the end. The son whom is name is Walter will soon realize what matters the most.

One morning, while getting ready to go to work, Walter and his wife Ruth were arguing about how life is for them. How he thinks that Ruth is getting tired of how they are living. With their son sleeping on the couch and how they are living in an old apartment. “Mama would listen to you. Say you been thinking about the deal Walter is interested in. Next thing you know, she’ll be listening to you.” He told his wife that maybe if she tells Mama that she had been thinking about the deal that he is in interested in, Mama might agree with her. The reason is because he really wants the money to invest it on a business that he is trying to get.

The same morning, Beneatha and Walter started arguing also. They are arguing about how Beneatha wants to be a doctor. “ Me and Ruth done made sacrifices for you. Why can’t you do something for the family?” He gave up his dreams just so that his sister will be able to go to school. To help, Ruth works to help on someone’s kitchen. For Walter, all Beneatha does is think about how she’ll be a doctor someday. He is mad at the fact that he gave up his dream and he does not understand why she can’t do the same. With him saying that to Beneatha he is being selfish and wants her to just give up her dream of being a doctor.

With the money, Mama bought a house for them to live in at Clybourne Park. It is a place where none of the colored people live in. The reason for this is that there’s lots of things that had happened to them. After Mama gave everyone the news, she asked her son, Walter about what he thinks about what she had done. “It was your money and you did what you wanted to do with it.” Without showing his frustration, he told Mama that why should he care about what she had done. It was her money and so, she can do whatever she wants with it. He’s just mad at the fact that Mama bought a house without telling any of them.

After Mama had thought about what Walter had told her, she decided to trust Walter with the money. With the money that Mama had given him, he was suppose to put half of the money in the bank under his name and the other half is for Beneatha’s schooling. Instead of putting the rest in the bank, Walter decided to put all the money for the business he is trying to get into. Once he had told everyone that the money is gone, everyone was disappointed especially Mama.

Then one morning, Walter and Beneatha once again was arguing. Walter started to feel bad of what he did and Beneatha was acting like Walter wanted all the things that are happening on purpose. “You feeling like you better than he is today? You give him up for me?” Mama asked her daughter. Beneatha made it seemed like just because of what he had done, they aren’t related by saying he’s no brother of her. She was still frustrated at the fact that the money for her school is gone. Mama is also mad at Beneatha by the way she treated her brother.

The next day while everyone was trying to pack up and getting ready to move, Walter made a call to Mr. Linder without the family knowing. At first he was saying that they’ll take his offer because its twice the cost of the money that he had lost. In the end, he did something better than his family thought he would do.

Linder then came back to the Younger’s house.  He was thinking that the family would take the offer he had made for them. “We don’t want your money.” Walter told Linder.  As much as how big the offer was, he refused it and told Linder to keep the money.  He told Linder that his family is still going to move and don’t want any trouble. Linder tried talking to Mama, but Mama agreed with what her son had said. Walter learned there are more valuable things than money. That sometimes, he got to think about his family and what’s best for them.

During the time that they were bringing all their things down, Mama and Ruth had a conversation. “He finally came into his manhood today didn’t he? Like rainbow after the rain.” Mama was happy how Walter had turned down the offer that was given to them. He acted more like of a man than he was before. Mama was proud of her son.

In the end of the story, even though their dreams didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to be, there’s more things that they learned, especially Walter. Before all he thinks about is money, but in the end he put his family before anything else. In my opinion, money is no matter as long as you have your family. Money might help you at some point, but not everything based on money. It is because money can’ buy you another family. Even though there’s some problems between you and your family, you know that no matter what happens, they’ll always be your family and they’ll be by your side no matter what. Being selfish don’t help you, it just make you be a different person.
